The three members meet Assembly Secretary, mull legal option

Three nominated MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday threatened to move the court if their demand for facilities in the Assembly was not conceded.

BJP local unit president V. Saminathan, who is one of the MLAs nominated by the Centre, met Vincent Rayer, Secretary, Legislative Assembly, and demanded immediate allocation of a room for the party legislators.

‘Illegal and biased’

In his letter addressed to the Secretary, Mr. Saminathan said: “It is regrettable to state that whenever I approached your office and demanded the same, your office did not give any response. This attitude of your office is highly illegal and reveals your bias.”

The allotment of room has to be made by the Secretary in his capacity as Estate Officer. As head of the Legislative Assembly, the secretary has to provide facilities, he said in the letter.

Mr. Saminathan said if the facilities were not provided immediately, they would consider other options, including legal recourse, to resolve the issue.

He and two other nominated members — K.G. Shankar and S. Selvaganapathy — met Mr. Rayer on July 7, two days after they were sworn-in by Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, demanding a room and other facilities for the BJP MLAs.

Amid the stand-off between ruling Congress and the Centre on the issue of nominations, Speaker V. Vaithilingam on July 9 returned the file to the Lieutenant Governor stating that he could not accept the new MLAs as he had not received any communication from the competent authorities about it. He made it clear that he would not accept the members as there had been no communication signed by the President on the issue.
