Froth, untreated sewage inflow, encroachments and dumping of garbage were found to be problems that go beyond Bellandur and Varthur lakes by citizen activists under the ‘Naagarika’ banner, who undertook the seventh leg of their visits to lakes on Saturday.
They noticed froth in Kaggadasapura lake in C.V. Raman Nagar ward. The lake is spread over 47 acres, of which three acres 24 guntas have been encroached, a release said. Though fenced, citizens found out that the lake has been a victim of encroachment, dumping of debris and garbage, and inflow of untreated sewage.
At Vibhutipura lakein Vignananagar ward, which is spread over 45 acres and 18 guntas, citizens discovered that three acres and 13 guntas had been encroached. They noticed inflow of untreated sewage. Besides, local residents alleged that the water body had turned into a hub for anti-social activities.
At Doddanekkundi lake, they found that inflowing sewage was directed to Varthur lake. “The local community claims that so far they have not received any government funds for lake development and have been rejuvenating the water body using CSR funds,” said their report. The lake is spread over 135 acres 25 guntas, but 3 acres 16.5 guntas has been encroached.
The team filed a complaint at Soladevanahalli Police Station regarding the encroachment and of dumping of medical waste and garbage in Chikka Banavara lake, the release added.
