Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday said corruption cannot be eradicated but can at least be controlled, and directed the Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, to file an affidavit in the matter.
A Division Bench of Justices R.M. Savant and Sadhana Jadhav was hearing a criminal petition filed by head constable Sunil Bhagwantrao Toke, alleging that the Traffic Police collect daily bribes of ₹100 to ₹200. He said the Traffic Police collect ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 per month from construction sites.
He said that since 2014, he has made innumerable complaints to the authoritirs concerned with audio and video evidence, but so far no action has been taken. He has said that FIRs be registered against corrupt officials, and a special investigation team should investigate his findings. Mr. Toke has said in acomplaint to his superiors that he was being harassed by his superiors as he did not want to be part of the system they had set up. He had also written to the Chief Minister last year.
In the last hearing, the State ACB had said the allegations were baseless.
