Another bid for solatium to ‘martyr’

L-G had rejected proposal in March

The Delhi government’s proposal to give ₹1 crore compensation to the family of an ex-serviceman who allegedly committed suicide last year is likely to be sent to L-G Anil Baijal again.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that though the L-G had rejected the proposal in March, the Cabinet had reiterated its stance that the kin of Ram Kishen Grewal, who allegedly killed himself in November 2016 over the delay in implementation of OROP, should be given ₹1 crore as ex-gratia. The Cabinet had approved the proposal as an exception to the AAP government’s rule, which grants ₹1 crore to those who lose their lives in the line of duty. The government had wanted to declare Mr. Grewal a martyr.

Hearing a plea against the government order, the High Court had said last week that granting compensation to families of those who commit suicide would set a wrong precedent.
