Says she was unable to bear his cries

A mother allegedly drowned her two-month-old ailing baby in a tank at Yamakanamaradi in Hukkeri taluk on Wednesday.

According to the police, baby Shaurya was suffering from pneumonia. The mother, identified as Shruti Santoshkumar Nandagavi, 26, told the police that she threw him into the tank as she was unable to bear his cries day and night.

She panicked

Though the baby was being treated, she believed that his condition was incurable. On Tuesday night, she panicked after her baby choked while drinking milk and started crying.

The police said Shruti worked and stayed in Belagavi city, but had gone to her mother’s place in Yamakanamaradi for delivery. The couple had taken the baby to KLE Hospital in Belagavi and the paediatricians had advised long-term treatment. Shruti hails from a middle-class family of merchants. She had shifted to Belagavi after marriage two years ago and worked as a clerk in a college. Her husband Santosh Kumar Bahubali is an office superintendent in a college in Belagavi.

Murder case registered

The police have taken Shruti into custody and registered a murder case.
