Zaheer Khan, India’s newly-appointed bowling consultant, will only be with the team on a tour-to-tour basis, as per the requirement of the team, a BCCI release stated on Thursday. Newly appointed head coach Ravi Shastri had stated that he prefers Bharat Arun as a part of his staff.
The BCCI, while expressing gratitude to the CAC comprising Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly, said in the statement that the CAC consulted Ravi Shastri “and decided on having Batting and Bowling consultants on overseas tour-to-tour basis, as per the requirement of the team.” It was earlier explicitly stated that Rahul Dravid had been hired as a batting consultant for overseas tours and Zaheer Khan as bowling consultant. Details of Zaheer’s contract, though, was yet to be finalised as of Thursday morning.
According to Times of India, while Shastri was not averse to the appointment of Zaheer, he was wary of the fact that the latter had almost no former experience as a coach, as opposed to Bharat Arun. Shastri’s choice of bowling coach was always Arun.
