The local units of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have started forming environment clubs in their respective wards to create awareness among residents on the need to fight pollution and protect the environment.
These clubs are being formed after the decision was taken at a volunteer meet conducted by the party on Sunday, where the importance of environment protection was discussed and the role of these clubs was also elaborated in detail.
AAP’s Delhi convenor Gopal Rai on Wednesday said that the party is still in the initial stage of sensitising people about the issue and encouraging them to join the environment clubs in their areas, irrespective of their political beliefs.
“Environment is an issue that affects everyone and does not look at a person’s political affiliations. Every winter, the Capital is enveloped in a thick layer of smog and pollutants and that’s when everyone suddenly wakes up to the reality. We must plant more trees and reduce emissions,” said Mr. Rai.
He added that volunteers from every ward have started meeting people about the focus and work of the group.
The plan is to recruit members so that these clubs can start work for the plantation drives this monsoon. The plantation season generally falls between July and September.
“The Centre has done nothing to save the environment. Delhi has already become a dust ball and is in the race for becoming the most polluted city in the world,” said Sumit Kumar, an AAP volunteer from Hari Nagar in west Delhi.
