Mumbai’s rains have remained in hiding for quite some time now. For about ten days, there have only been light rains with isolated moderate showers on a few occasions in the city, with heavy rain over 10 mm last recorded on July 3.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that cumulative rainfall across the regions of northern systems of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and South-eastern Uttar Pradesh has dropped substantially. “An absence of supplementary factors like non-development of any pressure base, no off-shore troughs over the west coast, among the other synoptic features, have caused the monsoons to be obtuse in various parts of the city,” Nitha Sasidharan, director at IMD’s regional centre at Colaba said.
Ms. Sasidharan said that over the next few days, rainfall was expected to increase, as the operation of winds is noticeably westwards. “Mumbai, is expected to receive heavy showers on July 14 and 15,” she said.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Santa Cruz observatory recorded a mere 0.4 mm of rain. The situation wasn’t great at Colaba either, with 2 mm rainfall. The off-shore trough running from the coast of Maharashtra to Kerala is now running from Karnataka to Kerala coast, which is also why rain has taken a back seat in Mumbai.
As per weathermen at Skymet, similar weather conditions will prevail over Mumbai during the next 24 hours.
