Around 300 members of the Dravidar Kazhagam, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Congress, the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Indian Union Muslim League and a few other organisations staged a protest here on Wednesday seeking exemption from medical entrance examination.
Led by M. Chandrasekar, secretary, Coimbatore Zone, DK, the cadre said that when admission to medical courses was made with higher secondary marks as the basis, the maximum to benefit was students from the oppressed classes, who for long were denied such opportunities.
The NEET was aimed at snatching away those opportunities.
The NEET results had deprived the students from socially backward classes of opportunities.
To ensure a level playing field, NEET should be abolished and admission to medical courses should be based on the higher secondary marks.
The protesters also urged the Central Government to earmark 27 % seats for backward class students in the 15 % undergraduate seats earmarked for central pool and 50 % post graduate seats.
