HC gives Corporation two weeks to make decision

The Madras High Court has directed the Chennai Corporation to consider a representation seeking to declare MRC Nagar in the city as no-hawking zone.

Noting that the Corporation must also ensure removal of all the encroachments in the area, the First Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar directed the authorities to take a decision on the representation in accordance with law within two weeks.

According to the petitioner, Raghu Raman, a resident of MRC Nagar, the area is flooded with hawkers who also encroach upon public properties and set up shops. Even food items are prepared on the roadside and sold in an unhygienic manner.

Claiming that his attempts to identify the encroachments were stiffly resisted by the hawkers, Mr. Raman alleged that the area is becoming a haven for tipplers who eat from the roadside shops.

As his representation to the authorities concerned did not evoke any response, the petitioner has approached the High Court.
