Post-mortem report says six-year-old trapped in vehicle died of burns caused by excessive heat

The post-mortem report of six-year-old Sonu, who was found dead inside a locked car in the first week of June in north-west Delhi’s Rani Bagh, concluded that he had died of burns caused by excessive heat. The boy’s parents had suspected it to be a case of murder.

A police officer privy to the case said that his autopsy report states:

No CCTV footage

“The child died due to complications of thermal burn injuries. After 60 degrees, the body starts burning, the doctor explained, and that’s what happened with Sonu.” However, how the boy entered the car is still not clear as there is no CCTV footage available.

The officer said that the owner of the car, Vijay Ahuja, may have left the car open the previous night when he parked it outside the boy’s residence and that Sonu entered it unaware of how to get out.

“He may have entered the car as he knew how to open it but unfortunately, he didn’t know how to come out or roll down the window which is how he got stuck,” he said.

No FIR registered

Mr. Ahuja, during the investigation, had claimed that he had locked the car but the officer explained that it was a centrally locked car due to which he may not have realised that it didn’t get locked.

DCP (North-West) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere confirmed that the FIR in the case hasn’t been registered so far and they have sought legal opinion to proceed with the case.

“We have sought legal opinion from the public prosecutor and are awaiting a reply. It’s regarding a child’s unfortunate death and is being taken very seriously,” he said.
