Use of these drugs can pose a threat to dengue patients

Chemists across the Capital have been asked by the Delhi government to not sell prescription drugs over the counter, keeping in mind medicines for fever and body ache that tend to be used in the monsoon as vector-borne diseases spread.

Advisory issued

Like last year, when the Delhi government banned the sale of fever medications without prescriptions, drugs like ibuprofen will not be sold without prescriptions for a few months. Health Minister Satyendar Jain had said in June that an order had been issued to chemists not to sell the drugs that can lead to blood thinning, since that could be dangerous for dengue patients.

This week, the Drugs Control Department issued an advisory to all the chemist associations asking them to strictly follow the guidelines regarding drugs in Schedule-H, H1 and X. The department’s memo stated, “it has been brought to the notice of the government that there is rampant misuse of scheduled drugs”. The memo advised chemists to stamp prescriptions after selling Schedule-H drugs and to keep a copies of prescriptions in case of Schedule-X drugs.
