With the admission process to NLSIU in Bengaluru expected to be completed over the next few days, the proposed 50% quota for State students has led to uncertainty.
The Karnataka Law School of India (Amendment) Bill 2017 was passed in the Council on Wednesday. The question now is whether the Bill will come into effect from this academic year (2017-18).
Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi said it will be implemented with “immediate effect”, while also stating that there are still processes to be followed before it becomes law. “It has to get notified in the gazette before being implemented. Taking the Bill forward is the responsibility of the Law Department,” he said. “I will speak to the Law Minister to hasten the process.”
The Bill has been welcomed by students. Ananya H.S., who secured 11th rank in CLAT this year, said: “Now many more students from the State will be able to get into NLSIU.”
Stating that the process will be meaningless unless the domicile seat reservation comes with economic reservation as well, Ravinandan B.B. of AIDSO said: “A recent study on NLSIU stated that the average annual income of the parents of students getting into the university was ₹30 lakh. We hope the government will fix the policy so that meritorious students from poor background also get into the university.”
Meanwhile, admissions for the five-year integrated course — B.A. L.L.B. (Honours) — shall be completed by June 30, as per the website.
