Retired High judge Justice C.S. Karnan, who was arrested yesterday in connection with a contempt of case, was lodged in Kolkata's Presidency Jail on Wednesday after the Supreme refused to grant him interim bail.

Justice Karnan was arrested by the police in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu yesterday.

The top had taken suo motu cognizance of numerous letters written by him against judges of the Madras High and the apex and restrained him from exercising administrative and judicial powers from February 8.

Karnan is the first ever sitting judge of a higher in judicial history to be sentenced to jail term.
