The legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed an amendment bill that seeks to reserve 50% of seats in National Law School of India University in Bengaluru for resident students of Karnataka.
Piloting the bill -- the National Law School of India (Amendment) Bill, 2017 – on behalf of Law Minister T B Jayachandra, Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy said only two students out of 80 who got selected to the prestigious institution were from Karnataka during the previous academic year.
Hence it was felt that seats should be reserved for students from Karnataka as has been done by other states.
A “resident student of Karnataka” has been defined as a student who has or either of his/her parent has resided in Karnataka for a period of not less than ten years preceding the qualifying examination. The student should also have studied in the state for not less than seven years preceding the qualifying examination.
The government initially had fixed the quota at 30% but enhanced it to 50% on the insistence of the BJP members.
