On June 20, at 0930 pm IST, OnePlus will finally take the wraps off its much-anticipated OnePlus 5 at a launch event in New York.

With the focus firmly on the cameras as underlined by the tagline FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS, this phone might finally be the flagship killer that the company has long been promising.

Both the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, the company's 2016 flagships, were highly acclaimed, but the cameras were thought to be just a tad behind those on top-tier phones the Samsung Galaxy S7, Google Pixel and iPhone 7 Plus. This time around though the folks at OnePlus are ready to go toe-to-toe with the Samsung Galaxy S8, the Pixel 2, the iPhone 8 and other contenders.

Weapon of choice

Their weapon of choice to forge ahead in the battle of the smartphone snappers - the first dual camera on a OnePlus phone.

The Verge, which was taken through the making of the OnePlus 5, has confirmed the specifications: the main camera is a 16 megapixel one with an f/1.7 aperture lens while the secondary camera is 20 megapixel with an f/2.6 "telephoto" lens. Both cameras are from Sony. Dan Seifert of The Verge said OnePlus touted this is as "the highest resolution dual-camera system on a smartphone today."

These are same rear camera specs that can be found on OnePlus' big brother Oppo's soon-to-be-released R11. But that is where the similarity ends. OnePlus claims the software powering these snappers is what will make the difference.

Design and other important specs

The design of the phone has also been confirmed:

OnePlus' CEO Pete Lau has also said the phone will be the thinnest from the company.

The battery is rumoured to be a 3300 mAh one. With the processor being the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, built on the 10 nm platform, energy efficiency is, however, expected to be higher than that users got from the 821-3400 mAh combo on the OnePlus 3T.

Higher quality audio capture: OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has also promised the "capture of higher quality audio in noisy settings like concerts", sharing this video as proof:

The fingerprint sensor, meanwhile, has been retained on the front of the phone, which looks similar to that found on the OnePlus 3T. Why change something that has worked well seems to have been the thought with the front panel that is also expected to retain a 16 megapixel front snapper.

The display is will remain a 5.5-inch full HD one is our understanding.

Also expected is Dash charge 2.0. The headphone jack is expected to stay.

The pre-installed software will be Android 7.1.1, the almost stock Android Oxygen OS version. Among new additions to software, expect a Reading Mode that recreates the look of the Kindle e-reader.

When it comes to colours, OnePlus might spring a few surprises with the popular Midnight black variant expected to be available from the start.

Price and availability

There are going to be two versions if the many leaks can be trusted - a 6 GB/64 GB version, and a 8GB/128 GB version.

The price of the 6 GB/64 GB version is expected to be Rs 32999, while the 8 GB/128 GB version is expected to retail at Rs 37999. This will make the phones the costliest from OnePlus to date, but considering the extra camera, the 835 processor, the costlier audio components and the fact that it might possibly be able to stand toe-to-toe with the much-costlier flagships, this will still remain a bargain.

The phone will go on sale on Amazon India from 4.30 PM the same day (June 22).

India launch and goodies on offer

India will have to wait a couple more days longer for the launch event, which will feature Brand Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan and OnePlus CEO Pete Lau among others. This event is set to be held in Mumbai at 2 pm on June 22.

Fans wishing to make it to this invitation-only event have already forked out Rs 999 for it.

OnePlus has promised a bag of goodies - worth over Rs 10000, including a launch T-shirt, OnePlus travel backpack worth Rs 3990, OnePlus sunglasses worth Rs 6000 and a OnePlus voucher worth Rs 999 - for these early birds.

There will also be pop-up events in four cities - Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Bengaluru - from June 23 to June 25.
