Seventeen years after they were taken off the roads of Bengaluru, litter bins are making a comeback. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike on Monday installed six twin bins in street corners in parts of Gandhinagar, including near National Market.
A total of 2,232 twin-litter bins will be installed in major commercial areas, markets and slums over the next one month, said a BBMP official. “The goal is to prevent black spots in the city,” he added. Each bin will have a capacity of 200 litres, with the green bin meant for wet waste and the blue bin for dry waste.
Prior to 2000, every corner of the city had dustbins, but they were removed as the civic administration adopted a no-bin policy and encouraged segregation at home.
Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George inaugurated the programme. Mayor G. Padmavathi and BBMP officials were present.
