Complaint filed against civic body

A team of lake and urban experts, members of lake groups, elected representatives and government officials under the banner of United Bengaluru on Saturday inspected Gubbalala, Talaghattapura and Sompura lakes in the Vrishabavathi Series located in Bommanahalli and Rajarajeshwari zones and found a BBMP vehicle releasing effluents into Sompura lake.

“The team has filed a complaint against the BBMP for discharging effluents into the lake,” said Priyadarshini S.K., spokesperson of United Bengaluru. Another complaint against dumping of debris into Talaghattapura lake was filed at the Talagattapura police station.

Residents, who observe violations of the National Green Tribunal order on dumping into lakes, can write to unitedbengaluru17@gmail.com. As per the NGT order, each violation must be fined ₹5,00,000.

The team found that untreated sewage was flowing into Talaghattapura and Gubbalala lakes and encroachment had reduced the size of all the three waterbodies.

The team comprised Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MP; M. Krishnappa and S.T. Somashekara, MLAs; Arya Srinivas, councillor, Hemmingapura ward; Hanumanthaiah, councillor, Uttarahalli ward; and civic activists N.S. Mukunda, Ashwin Mahesh and Sridhar Pabbisetty.
