Assam is no stranger to monsoon floods, and this year is proving to be no different. On June 14, 2017, after incessant rain for 48 hours, the capital Guwahati woke up to severe waterlogging; a flood alert was sounded in at least five districts in lower Assam; and both the Brahmaputra and the Barak rivers were owing above the danger mark.

The India Meteorological Department forecast more heavy rain in the region. The rain has cut o the highway between Assam and Nagaland, with vehicles stranded in the rising waters; and the rail link between lower and upper Assam has been hit by landslides.

The southwest monsoon has caused havoc in neighbouring Manipur and Mizoram too, with heavy rain for the past few days resulting in ash oods and landslides. At least 13 people are reported dead, and hundreds affected due to ash oods.
