‘Issues came to the fore only in the last two days’

In view of the interim order passed by the High Court of Madras pertaining to the admission of students to postgraduate courses in self-financing medical colleges and deemed universities, Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Friday called for the overhauling of Centac and to form a new committee.

Addressing a press meet, she alleged that several issues cropped at the Centralised Admission Committee (Centac). “We have identified those issues and we need to resolve them. Centac cannot operate with the old committee. It should have a new committee with a standard operating procedure so that the admission process is fair. Now, we need to address the whole issue that will come up during the UG admissions. We do not know what is going wrong there. We need to settle that,” she said.

‘Compelled to intervene’

The Lt. Governor said the problem in admission came to the open and she intervened in the last two days of the counselling.

“We hoped that the government will settle the matter but when we realised that there was confusion and as L-G’s office we needed to step in. We went to Centac and found several problems and that last counselling held has been acknowledged and valid,” she said.

She added: “Our view was at variance with that of the State government. Therefore, as a respondent, I requested the secretary to plead what had happened so far and we placed the facts before the court.”

Ms. Bedi thanked the High Court judges for relieving the suffering of students.
