GJEPC to set up gem, jewellery training institute in Udupi

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is setting up Indian Institute of and Jewellery (IIGJ) in Udupi in in association with National Institute of Design(NID),

The foundation stone for the institute was laid today by the apex gem and jewellery trade body in Udupi, GJEPC said in a release issued here.



This training centre will be amongst the series of training institutes and facility centres that will be set up by GJEPC across the country.

"Across the globe, the best of jewellery pieces are hand made. Global retail giants like Cartier, Boucheron or Van Cliff command premium prices for their hand made jewellery. India, whose forte lies in crafting most intricate handmade jewellery should capitalise on this opportunity by building necessary infrastructure," said Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry

By setting up institutes like IIGJ and other facility centres GJEPC once again has come forward to further equip Indian and jewellery sector and make it globally competitive, she added.

The Institute will provide training to the youth in the region in various aspects of hand-crafted jewellery making.
