Govt intensifies drive against waterlogging

Joint teams to conduct inspections

Pre-empting the annual blame game that breaks out between agencies when monsoon rains lead to waterlogged roads, the Delhi Assembly’s Petitions Committee will carry out three days of joint inspections at vulnerable points.

‘Blame game’

From Friday till Sunday, members of the committee will accompany officials of the Public Works Department and the three municipal corporations while they inspect the waterlogging points that they blame each other for. Greater Kailash MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj, who heads the committee, said inspections would cover areas under the south, north and east municipal corporations.

The PWD compiled a list of points that tend to get waterlogged due to the faults of the municipal corporations, and submitted it to the committee on Thursday. Similarly, the municipal corporations have been asked for their list of waterlogging points that they blame the PWD for.

The Petitions Committee had decided on June 5 that its members would accompany PWD officials as they inspected the progress of de-silting of drains.

‘Deadline not met’

According to officials, the deadline for completing the de-silting work, June 15, has not been met and there is a lot of work pending. Since the municipal corporations maintain smaller drains that eventually lead to the PWD’s larger ones, the agencies end up blaming each other for not clearing silt in time for the monsoon.
