Two persons were arrested by the city police on Friday on charges of causing grievous injury to pedestrians, driving a car under the influence of alcohol and ramming into the compound wall of the bungalow of the Chief Justice of Madras High Court Indira Banerjee on DGS Dinakaran Salai.
According to initial reports, three pedestrians were slightly injured while another was grievously injured in the accident. They were taken to Government Royapettah Hospital
Police said the alleged accident took place at 1.45 a.m. when residents of the area were sound asleep. The road houses a number of official residences for the Ministers of the state and some judges.
Iyyappan(30), a call taxi driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, was driving his car on DGS Dinakaran salai, also known as Greenways Road. He was accompanied by his uncle Velayutham who was also reportedly drunk. When they neared the bungalow of the Chief Justice, Iyappan lost the control of vehicle. First it hit the speed breaker just in front of the bungalow, ran over the platform to its left and damaged the compound wall.
On hearing the crash, the police personnel who were on duty in the bungalow ran towards the spot and pulled out both occupants from the mangled car.
