Senior citizens felicitated ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao advised children to respect their parents and grandparents — the assets of society. The City Police, in association with various hospitals, on Wednesday organised a walk and free medical camp for senior citizens, ahead of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

Doctors from M.J. Naidu Hospital, Ramesh Hospitals, Sandhya Eye Care, Kamineni Hospitals, Aruna Kidney Care, AP Super Speciality Dental Hospital and Indian Medical Association treated patients and distributed medicines.

The Minister, along with Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Rammohan Rao and City Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang participated in the programme.

“Parents bring up children with great efforts and give them a respectful life in society. But it is unfortunate that some children are neglecting the welfare of their parents,” the Minister said and advised children to take good care of their parents and grandparents.

Mr. Rammohan Rao said the Telugu Desam Party had increased the old age pension to ₹1,000 and praised the police for organising the programme.

Mr. Sawang said the police were taking care of the senior citizens under ‘Vrudha Mitra’ programme and were visiting colonies to identify elderly persons staying alone.

Later, the organisers felicitated the octogenarians and septuagenarians, Senior Citizens’ Association presidents and the doctors who treated the senior citizens. As many as 700 patients were screened in the medical camp organised at A convention centre.

Deputy Commissioners of Police G.V.G. Ashok Kumar, G. Pala Raju and Kranthi Rana Tata, former Rajya Sabha member Chennupati Vidya and consultant M.C. Das were among those participated.
