Voluntary blood donation events by various organisations marked World Blood Donor Day here on Wednesday.

Several officials attached to the Department of Health and Department of Income tax and doctors donated blood in the voluntary blood donation drive organised by the District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU) at Race Course.

B. Asokan, Dean, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), inaugurated the drive by donating blood.

Over 30 officials donated blood in the drive for which technical support was extended by Blood Bank of CMCH.

A. Mangayarkarasi, Medical Officer of the CMCH Blood Bank, said that the participation of top officials in the drive could spread this year’s message: ‘What can I do? Give blood, give now, give often’.

Dr. Mangayarkarasi said the number of blood donors was shrinking while the demand for blood and components was on the rise.

At Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, a blood donation camp was organised by Sri Ramakrishna Arts and Science College and National Service Scheme (NSS).

Several students and NSS volunteers donated blood.

A World Blood Donor Day rally organised by Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society and DAPCU will be flagged off by District Collector T.N. Hariharan from the Collectorate premises at 10.a.m. on Thursday.
