Green Guide letters: A fine celebration of local filmmaking

How absolutely wonderful is David Stratton's Stories of Australian Cinema. Huge accolades to all concerned for documenting (in a very entertaining manner) our filmmaking history. Aren't we lucky to have such a passionate, dedicated and clever keeper of records. Thoroughly enjoyable to watch too. I can't wait for this week's episode.

To the bat cave!

Vale Adam West. A great actor from the time when heroes knew their job.

Get it right, by George!

What a ripping, splendid, super, rather marvellous film on Sunday night of the two princesses having a jolly frolic and caper on VE day in London (A Royal Night Out). But, Aunty, showing it again on Monday! Cripes, one cannot and indeed should not forgive one for such utter disregard of your devoted viewers, by George!

Gardening pleasures

What a delight to have the lovely Indira Naidoo back on the telly in Gardening Australia. Together with the segment on Pete Cundall's 90th, it makes the June 10 edition a "collectable".

Taking on the judges

Ben Pobjie's column (Mouthing off, 8/6) was as funny as ever. I might consider watching reality shows if more contestants were like Troy on House Rules and dared to disagree with the pompous judges.

How about real news?

I couldn't agree more with Ross Daniels (Letters, 8/6). How many times has one of the commercial TV news broadcasters opened with a 10-minute story about some footballer who has stubbed his toe, or something just as banal. And all this is accompanied by the crash and crescendo of overly dramatic music that imparts a sense of urgency. This is not serious news.

Advertising truths

I just want to thank TV so much for all the info I have been getting from the ads, especially about insurance. Like that helpful firm that immediately sends you two pretty girls in white blouses to help when you have broken down in woopwoop. And the one that is run by little animals. And several that are very honest in telling you your premiums have been calculated so they can generously give you a free gift later. And I won't even start on all that helpful medical advice from those little blue blobs.

Clock ticks on the case

The episode of Poirot on GEM on  June 7 had 51 ads and promos. These were in blocks of 11, 11, 8, 11 and 10 and ran for 23 minutes. This is over one third of a 65-minute program. Doesn't leave much time for Poirot to solve the case.

Viewing not dictated

I am addicted to Dicte: another brilliant Scandinavian series to add to a list which includes The Bridge, The Legacy, Borgen et al.  Thank you, SBS On Demand.

Moving right along

Why do most viewers consider Britain's Got Talent a far better production and more enjoyable to watch than The Voice? Is it because more acts are constantly being presented, without the unnecessary background history, and keep the show moving. Most contestants appear to be grateful and humble. Along with that, Britain has Anthony Partlin and Declan Donnelly, both established TV comedy presenters. I am a Dinky Die Aussie but can't help making the comparison.

Don't count as classics

Foxtel Classics, really? The same westerns repeated endlessly and bizarrely constant screenings of Elvis Presley and Carry On films.  Please bring back the TCM channel.
