Veterinary varsity’s expertise sought

The State government is planning to set up an exclusive fisheries and oceanography university in coastal Andhra Pradesh, giving a fillip to research and academic activity in myriad areas.

It will be set up under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode and according to sources, a few corporate houses have already expressed their willingness to tie up with the State government.

Academic support

“The State government has sought our academic support to realise the dream of setting up the university,” Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University Vice-Chancellor Y. Haribabu told The Hindu on Wednesday.

“An academic institution that focuses on oceanography and fisheries is the need of the hour in coastal Andhra Pradesh, which is blessed with several hundreds kilometres of coastline,” according to Prof. Haribabu.

Ornamental species

The SVVU has intensified research on breed and production of ornamental fish species, which are in high demand in the market across the country.

“An intensive research has begun on the ornamental fish species and breeding at the Muthukur Veterinary College in Nellore district and the Fisheries Research Station at Balabhadrapuram in East Godavari district,” said the Vice-Chancellor .

Fisheries polytechnic

With the polytechnic course in fisheries becoming a success at Bhavadevarapalli in Krishna district, the SVVU has permitted the Pydah group of educational institutions to set up a fisheries polytechnic college at Patwala in E. Godavari district.

Prof. Haribabu interacted with the students of the Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao (MVKR) Fisheries Polytechnic College in Krishna district during his maiden visit and promised all facilities.
