Members of the Delhi Assembly’s Committee on Petitions will accompany the Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary to check the progress on cleaning of drains before the monsoon, sources said on Monday.

The panel had on June 1 summoned PWD Secretary Ashwani Kumar as well as Delhi Chief Secretary M. M. Kutty and Health Secretary Madhup Vyas to discuss the condition of PWD drains and supply of medicines in government hospitals respectively. Appearing before the panel on Monday, Mr. Kumar apprised the members about the desilting work being done by the PWD ahead of the June 15 deadline, sources said.

The committee, headed by Greater Kailash MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj, then decided its members would accompany Mr. Kumar and other PWD officials during surprise inspections of the work being carried out.

As per the PWD, there are 163 points in the city that are vulnerable to waterlogging, based on experiences from past years and information from the Delhi Traffic Police.

Meanwhile, on reports that supply of medicines in government hospitals had been inadequate, sources said the Health Secretary cited a report from June 1 that showed there was no shortage. The issue will be discussed further in the next meeting.
