The Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK), which won the clean city award for proper collection and segregation of garbage from generation points a decade-and-a-half ago, has once again embarked on the task by distributing two dustbins to each household and commercial establishment in Karimnagar district.
On the occasion of World Environment Day on Monday, MCK authorities launched the campaign by distributing the dustbins to all its employees and municipal Corporators. Prior to this, Mayor S. Ravinder Singh and Municipal Commissioner K. Shashanka, among others, planted the saplings in the office compound.
The initiative to distribute two dustbins for segregation of waste was taken up as part of the race for the Smart City tag. Earlier, the MCK had distributed the dustbins in some localities informing residents to segregate the garbage into biodegradable (green dustbin) and non-degradable (blue), but there was poor response to the same.
Self start
In order to motivate people, the MCK has decided to first motivate the staff and elected representatives to use the same and be role models. It would later conduct awareness meetings in all localities and distribute the dustbins.
Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, Mr. Singh said the civic body has chalked out strategies to distribute the dustbins to 60,000 households in Karimnagar town. “Initially, we will motivate the people to use the dustbins to segregate garbage. Later, we will fine those who do not.”.
“We have already declared the 14.5 kilometre stretch of R&B roads as litter-free and installed dustbins at various points. However, a majority of shopkeepers throw garbage in front of the shops,” he said.
Once the roads are completed, heavy fines would be imposed, Mr. Singh warned.
