Car-Free Sundays, an initiative of The Hindu in association with the Coimbatore Corporation and the City Traffic Police, turned the busy D.B. Road in R.S. Puram into an activity zone on Sunday morning.
After its big success on NSR Road in Saibaba Colony, the Car-Free Sundays event has been shifted to the new location. From aerobics to tug-of-war, the children, women and elders had a fun-filled sporting experience on the 200 metre stretch of DB Road that was cordoned off for vehicular traffic from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m..
Green cover
Launching the refreshed Car-Free Sundays on DB Road, M. Durai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), extended all support from the Department of Police for the initiative. Kavidasan, Director (HR), Roots Group of Companies, spoke on the need for keeping the city clean and increasing its green cover by planting more trees. Mr. Durai inaugurated the sapling distribution drive by Roots Industries, on the eve of World Environment Day, by giving way the first sapling to actor Sruthi Shanmuga Priya. More than 100 saplings were distributed to the public. Around 100 employees of Roots Industries took out a cycle rally to create awareness on protecting the environment and limited use of motorised vehicle. Skate board, football, archery, softball cricket and basketball sponsored by sporting partner Decathlon attracted children as well as elders. “I wanted to shoot an arrow after watching Bahubali. Now my dream has come true,” said S. Kaarthik from Sundaram Street, after hitting the bullseye on the dart board.
Students from Satchidananda Jothi Niketan International School in Kallar performed dance, villu pattu, yoga and magic show.
Beethovans BodyZeal Fitness Studio, fitness partner of the event, conducted an aerobic session for the public. Mark1 events was the events manager and Radio City the FM partner.
