This refers to ‘Cricketing conflicts’ (From the Viewsroom, June 5) by Venky Vembu. With the Indian skipper Virat Kohli rubbishing allegations of a rift between him and coach Anil Kumble on his side, precipitating the matter will only muddy the placid waters. Sufficient damage is done to the Indian cricket with the assumed rift between captain and coach.

Climate pact

This refers to the editorial “Worsening climate” (June 5). It would be an understatement that it will send a negative message to the world. As many as 194 countries have signed on dotted lines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and restrict rise in global average temperature two years back.

US President Donald Trump has annoyed most of the other countries by his this decision. Blaming India and China that they would get maximum benefits out of the Paris climate agreement is anything but fact.

While both China and India have made it clear that they are not keen on building more coal plants, his argument to link this decision with protecting American jobs is flimsy. India now must start re-designing its strategy for its ties with China.

Trump’s fallacies

US has reneged on 200 years of scientific inquiry and 20 years of patient diplomacy to combat climate change.Trump fixated on fulfilling his catchy campaign promises is able to think no farther than in units of 100 days!

His ideas on trade and treaties are raw and brusque. Conceding that tariff wars could price US goods too high ,he naively believes that this would encourage foreign companies to “Make in America”!

Modernise Railways

This is with reference to the news report “Railways to explore new funding routes (June 5). Hence for promoting tourism, creating job opportunities and improving transport facilities bold reforms are required in Indian Railways.

Private investment/partnership and FDI should be allowed in Railways for improving passenger facilities, safety and cleanliness in Indian Railways. Railways should not be used as a political tool but for economic growth and development.

The funds meant for improvement in railways should not be wasted by giving in to populist measures. The Minister should initiate bold reforms by starting new railway lines especially in backward States such as Bihar, Odisha and north eastern States.

New India

The BJP government in the centre has the won the Lok Sabha elections purely on the plank of development and eradicating deep rooted corruptions. After three years now in office there is no doubt that it has lived up to its poll promise and the biggest advantage is that it has now built up a huge credibility.

With single minded focus on development and social welfare the government has successfully been able to win the confidence of people. Development is evidently seen and experienced by the people for the first time after many years now.

There is no credible opposition. The government must ceaselessly strive to take India to a new high.

Space science

Kudos to ISRO for launching GSLV MKIII to augment India’s communication resources. This has enabled India to occupy a place of prestige and recognition among scientifically advanced nations.

However few years back, before India’s Mars mission, a section of society deliberated if it is necessary to indulge in the luxury of this costly space mission ignoring the deplorable conditions of millions of rural Indians, as the money spent on this mission could have been used for development work in rural areas. But investment in space science has to be continued. Those who look for immediate return may fail to see the long-term benefits.
