The coast guards have rescued all 27 workers trapped in the barge that suffered damage after being hit by a reef in the sea, about a kilometre from the Ullal beach.
The Indian Coast Guards resumed the rescue operation around 6 a.m. on Sunday after it suspended on Saturday night following rough weather.
All those in the barge were rescued. The coastal Security Police interceptor boat rescued five persons while the remaining five on the barge were moved to dinghy of the Coast Guard. There are none on the wrecked barge, said Deputy Commissioner of Police K. Shantaraju.
Coastal Security Police Inspector Gangi Reddy and his team were also involved in the rescue operation. They used a 12-tonne interceptor boat.
All the people will be moved to Indian Coast Guard's Amartya ship in which 14 rescued persons have been placed. This ship is likely to arrive at the New Mangalore Port once the condition of the sea improves. Sea is presently rough.
