Brisbane Racing Club fumes, punters to face delays after Doomben confusion

Confusion between Brisbane racing organisers and Queensland Rail will cause travel headaches for punters, with commutes of up to an hour expected for those heading to Oaks Day at Doomben Racecourse.

The Brisbane Racing Club is fuming after being told by Queensland Rail that Doomben station will be undergoing track work over the weekend, with racegoers told to allow up to an hour extra when travelling to Saturday's event.

Rail delays for Oaks Day

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad says people travelling by train to the Oaks Day races at Doomben this Saturday can expect one hour delays with scheduled track closures in place. 7 News Queensland

A BRC spokesman said it was only told about the work a fortnight ago.

"The BRC asked Queensland Rail to move the closure to later in June because of the importance of a train service for these iconic race meetings, which have been in place for 50 years," the spokesman said in a statement.

"It's disappointing that the Doomben line will be closed for one of its busiest Saturdays of the year."

Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Jackie Trad said the work had been scheduled for a year.

"These track closures take a lot of work and a lot of organisation in terms of identifying staff, lining up the infrastructure workers to do the track maintenance that's required and ultimately we need to carry it out for safety purposes," Ms Trad said on Friday.

"I'm pleased to say there will be rail replacement services, as there always is when there are track closures, and we'll be working with Racing Queensland to make sure they run as smoothly as possible."

Opposition leader Tim Nicholls said there were no excuses as the Oaks Day was a regular event.

"Oaks Day happens every year, it's in the calendar, it's not a surprise," Mr Nicholls said.

"There have been a series of meetings going on, there have been meetings between BRC and (QR), and yet 13 days ago they notified that the train services wouldn't run."

The mix-up is another hiccup in this year's Oaks Day, with BRC forced to move the annual Ladies Day event to Doomben because of concerns over the quality of the recently refurbished turf at Eagle Farm racecourse.
