Boys outshine girls in CBSE Class X results, pass percentage dips

Boys outshine girls in this year's Class X board examinations of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) by showing a better pass percentage than the latter.

The school board declared the results of the examinations for all regions on Saturday.

The statistics released by the board indicated that boys also outnumbered girls in securing a perfect 10 cumulative grade points average (CGPA) in examinations this year.

“Boys have done better than girls. While the overall pass percentage of the boys reached 93.4, the percentage of girls qualifying the examinations remained at 92.5,” the CBSE said in a statement.

The board, however, did not share data on the exact number of boys and girls passing the examinations.

A total of 16,59,558 candidates appeared for the board examinations held by the CBSE between March and April this year. Of them, 15,09,383 students were declared as qualified. A total of 1, 05,188 boys secured a perfect 10 CGPA.

The number of girls securing the highest grade point of 10 remained at 1,00,950. While the overall pass percentage of the students came at 90.95, Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) region of the CBSE recorded the highest pass percentage of 99.85, followed by Chennai region 99.62, Allahabad region 98.23 and Dehradun region 97.27. Guwahati region which includes north-eastern States recorded the lowest pass percentage of 65.53.

Chennai region of the CBSE includes Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Daman and Diu.

School-wise, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) recorded the highest pass percentage of 99.67, followed by Kendriya Vidyalayas 99.66 and private schools 97.43.

The pass percentage of the differently abled students came at 89.4 with a total of 3,803 students out of 4,254 clearing the examinations.

Though the overall pass percentage of the students came at 90.95 in this year's examinations, the CBSE data indicated that it was a dip by 5% if compared to the statistics of the last year. The pass percentage of the students last year was pegged at 96.21, which was down by about 1.11% over the percentage of students passed in 2015.

It was the last optional board examinations that the CBSE conducted this year. From 2018, the school board has decided to hold a compulsory board examinations for all students of Class X. The CBSE had made Class X board examinations optional in 2010 in view of the rising number of students committing suicide over their performance.

Under the option board examination system, two types of examinations were held—school based and board based.

Board-based examination was held mainly for those students who wish to move out from the CBSE system of schooling to join the schools affiliated to some other board in the country.

Over 7.28 lakh students took the school-based board examinations this year. Of them, nearly 7 lakh students were declared qualified. Over 7.51 students out of a total 8,12,471 came out with flying colours in the board based examinations held by the CBSE.
