Hold their son responsible for their plight; seek old age maintenance

An aged couple from Reponi village in the adjoining Mahabubabad district staged a sit-in demonstration at Dharna Chowk in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday to draw the attention of the district administration to their plight. K. Malliah, 66 and Pullamma, 59, are parents of Lingaiah, a constable attached to the Khammam urban police station.

Over a period of eight months, the couple had staged dharna in front of the district administration with their plea. Since the grievance was unresolved, they took to the streets once again to draw attention to their predicament. They even displayed a banner comprising slogans to express their anguish over the alleged apathy of their son towards them.

Talking to the media, Mallaiah alleged that his elder son Lingaiah had left them to fend for themselves in their twilight years after securing the government job. The couple had exhausted their lifelong savings from daily wage to bear the educational expenses of their son. They said the previous year they had distributed their land among the three sons, the elder one being Lingaiah. In lieu of that, it was agreed upon that the sons would give some amount each towards the maintenance of the parents. Lingaiah allegedly refused to give his share of amount.

The aggrieved couple has been shifted to the Khammam urban police station by the cops deployed at the Dharna Chowk. So far, Lingaiah has denied the charges placed against him by his parents. Police sources said Lingaiah claimed that his parents were motivated at the behest of some relatives to tarnish his image. Nagendra Chary, Circle Inspector, Khammam urban police station, said the matter would be represented to higher authorities.
