30 detained for protests against cow slaughter law

Thirty people who had gathered to protest against the Union government’s law on cattle slaughter were taken into preventive custody on Friday.

The protest was organised by Dalit Sangharsha Samithi, Samata Sainik Dal, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), Swaraj Abhiyan, Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Karnataka Janashakthi.

Agitators assembled at Hudson Circle and were marching towards Town Hall, when they were asked to disperse by the police as they did not have permission to protest. Some protesters gheraoed police jeeps and shouted slogans against the police. They tried to climb onto the vehicles. The police then arrested the protesters and released them later.

Meanwhile, members of SDPI protested in Shivajinagar. “Ban on cattle slaughter is unconstitutional and is a violation of right to food. The Centre should reverse its move,” the protesters said. Since they too did not have permission to protest, the police arrested around 15 people.
