Exchange of scrapped notes seized before Dec 30 allowed

more-in

The demonetised currency seized or confiscated by law enforcement agencies or produced before courts on or before December 30, 2016 can be tendered at any office of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or nationalised bank designated by the RBI for depositing or exchanging them with legal tender of the same value, a notification of the Union Ministry of Finance produced by the Centre in the Kerala High Court says.

The notification issued on May 12 says that those who got back the confiscated demonetised currency on the orders of the courts shall be entitled to deposit or exchange such notes on production of the court directive.

However, the serial number of such currency should have been noted by the law enforcement agency and mentioned in the order of the courts. The governments could also deposit such notes or change the notes forfeited in favour of the Centre or the State governments.
