The Chinese government is willing to work with its counterpart in India to counter terrorism, MA Zhanwu Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata said.

According to him, while there was still sometime before India and China “understand and trust” each other to embark on joint development and research in defence segments.

“There is no good terrorism and bad terrorism. We are working together on counter terrorism and there is a lot we can do together,” he said while speaking at a session organised by the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce.

To a specific question on Pakistan and its relationship, the Consul General pointed out that Pakistan was a “developing country”. “Not everyone believes Pakistan is a rogue state,” he said.

Trade with China

According to Zhanwu, China was not looking to block imports from India. In fact, pharmaceuticals was one sector where the country was looking at imports.

“There is a huge demand. And, we are working with India on IT and other new developments like robotics,” he said adding that Chinese telecom major Huwaei had already invested towards setting up a research centre in Bengaluru. In fact, the research centre was amongst the largest for the company outside its home country (China).

Pointing out that China was looking to work towards removal of trade barriers, he said an ‘import fair’ was being organised next year.
