As Saharanpur remained tense following the clashes, the Congress rued the state government’s inability to instil confidence among the oppressed classes, even as it demanded an independent probe into the incidents of violence.

“When a section of society feels that it can get away with murder, the weaker sections, the voiceless, the Dalits, feel that they have no protection from the government,” K Raju, chairman, AICC Scheduled Castes Department, told reporters here.

“This is what has happened in Saharnapur,” he said, accusing the Uttar Pradesh government of failing to implement the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act of 1989.

He asked the state government to set up special courts to conduct a trial of such cases as mandated by the law.
