A heart was transplanted into a 62-year-old woman at Narayana Hrudayalaya on Hosur Road after a green corridor was created to transport the organ from Sheshadripuram.
A 12-member medical team was on its toes on Wednesday at Narayana Hrudayalaya to receive the live heart.
At around 5.15 pm, the ambulance left Apollo Hospital in Sheshadripuram with the heart accompanied by Bengaluru traffic police vehicles. Within 25 minutes, they covered a 29-kilometre stretch to reach Narayana Health City.
The recipient, a retired private sector employee from Bengaluru, was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy for the past four years. She was advised a heart transplant six months ago by Dr Bagirath Raghuraman, senior consultant, interventional cardiologist from Narayana Health City.
Monitoring agency
She had registered with Jeevasarthakathe (formerly known as ZCCK), which is appointed to monitor the implementation of the transplantation of human organs. After three months of her registration, on Wednesday, her blood matched with that of a 42-year-old donor, who was a homemaker from Belur.
She was declared brain dead on May 22 after she met with an accident.
Dr Raghuraman said the families of the donor and recipient were cooperative. He added, “The surgery went off well and the woman who received the heart is expected to live without any complications.”
