Comprehensive plan ready to help Darjeeling curb water problems

KOLKATA: A comprehensive Rs 24 crore plan has been drawn up by West Bengal government to give a huge relief to water-stressed people in Darjeeling. The state government is all set to implement a rainwater harvesting project for slum dwellers in the hill town.

As part of the project slums in Darjeeling that are not connected to normal water supply will get access to water for drinking and washing for a period of nine months to a year..

Global Climate Facility Funding is providing financial assistance for the project. This is for the first time that a rainwater harvesting project of such a scale is being implemented in the state. The municipal engineering directorate is executing the project.

It may be mentioned that both the state urban development and environment departments have urged the urban local bodies to recycle waste water and practice rainwater harvesting to conserve this precious resource.
