Roads in the central part of the city paralysed

Left Front cadres and supporters fought pitched battles with the police on the main streets in the city and suburbs leading to Nabanna, the State secretariat, on Monday.

The Left Front had decided to opt for a ‘Nabanna march’ to protest on various issues including corruption in governance by the Trinamool Congress.

The various peasants’ wing of the Left parties has also joined in demanding fair price for farmers’ produce.

Accordingly, the Kolkata police and their counterparts in Howrah had put up barricades to prevent the march and cordon off protestors.

However, the police had to resort to lathi-charge, use of tear gas shells and water canons, to disperse the crowds after Left Front supporters decided to break down barricades and took to brick-batting.

Several senior leaders include Left Front leader Biman Bose, sustained injuries in the ensuing clash. Police personnel have also suffered injuries.

Large parts of central Kolkata that include areas like Rani Rashmoni Road, Hastings, Mayo Road and so on still remain paralysed with traffic movement restricted. Roads leading to the State secretariat have been barricaded.
