Brisbane shrouded in fog as flights delayed and diverted from Brisbane Airport

Air traffic controllers at Brisbane Airport had a difficult job on Sunday morning, as thick fog lingered causing flights in and out to be delayed or diverted.

By 8am, the airport website showed a total of nine flights had been delayed and one diverted due to the low visibility.

"Fog is usually short-lived, but this is quite a thick one," a Brisbane AIrport spokeswoman said.

"If you're flying today definitely check our website, app or your airline and expect potential delays."

However, during the course of the morning, the spokeswoman said based on the advice of Brisbane Airport officials, airlines had diverted flights to Sydney, Coolangatta and Cairns due to the fog.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Lauren Pattie said the fog was expected to clear at the airport about 9am and lift from the city slightly earlier.

Most of the south-east experienced the low visibility on Sunday morning, with fog seen as far inland as Roma, as far north as Kingaroy and also in Lismore just the other side of the border.

Ms Pattie said there was also fog possible for Monday, with a similar level of coverage expected.
