The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday ordered that notices be issued to Karnataka on a petition that seeks protection of Varthur and Agara lakes in Bengaluru.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar agreed to hear separately the matter pertaining to Varthur and Agara lakes and issued the notices to the state government seeking its reply.

The petition has been filed by Rajya Sabha member, D Kupendra Reddy. It has urged the tribunal to direct the government to protect the two lakes from encroachment and pollution.
