Seers want bill against superstition enacted soon

A delegation comprising 51 seers on Tuesday met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and impressed upon him to enact the proposed anti-superstition Bill at the earliest.

The delegation, led by Nidumamidi Mutt seer Veerabhadra Channamalla Swami, met Siddaramaiah at the latter’s residence and said that enacting the Bill was necessary to prevent cheating of innocent people in the name of rituals.

Channamalla Swami told reporters that the chief minister promised the delegation that the state Cabinet will discuss the Bill and take an appropriate decision. He said the Cabinet committee headed by Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa constituted to look into provisions of the Bill had not met for several months.

Besides, it has been a year since an expert committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Shivraj V Patil submitted its report on the Bill.
The Swami said the proposed Bill is not against any religion. If required, the government may host the draft Bill on a website and elicit public opinion.
