ACT Brumbies women go down fighting against Sydney in national championship final

The ACT Brumbies women's team have fallen short of a national championship dream, falling to powerhouse Sydney 34-0 in the final on Sunday.

Sydney's triumph completed a national-championship hat-trick and left the Brumbies heartbroken for a second year in a row after a repeat result of last year's grand final.

Stuttering Brumbies fall to Lions

The Brumbies have slumped to a fourth straight loss, going down 13-6 to the Lions at home.

The Brumbies fought hard but had two players sent to the sin bin as they defended for most of the game.

Wallaroo Ash Hewson led the charge for Sydney, finishing with a 19-point haul and ending the Brumbies' unbeaten charge at the tournament on the Gold Coast.

The Brumbies failed to fire a shot in the final and had only a handful of chances inside their attacking half as Sydney flexed its muscle and cruised to a win.

Sydney had the opening points of the match with a try to tighthead Evelyn Horomia, before two penalties from skipper and flyhalf Hewson stretched that margin to 13 points at half-time.

It was the back end where they really found their groove in the title decider, with Victoria Latu, Chloe Leupape and Hewson all crossing on their way to a big win.

Hewson led the way for Sydney throughout the tournament, with only WA managing to nab points against the heavyweight title holders.

Queensland finished third with a 27-13 win over WA earlier in the day, with five penalties from Fenella Hake sealing that victory for the hosts.

The South Australia Barbarians took out the seventh-place playoff in a tight 17-12 win over Victoria, despite a double from Rebels No 8 Ashley Marsters.

Standouts from the competition will be selected for the Wallaroos squad to take on England, New Zealand and Canada in June, before August's World Cup in Ireland.
