Unknown substance sprayed in Melbourne club

Police have launched an investigation after an unknown substance was sprayed over patrons on the dance floor of a club in Melbourne's inner north. Vision: Channel 7.

Police and ambulance were called to Perseverance hotel on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy about 1am on Sunday after reports of an assault.

"Upon their arrival, they found approximately 15 people had been affected by an unknown substance which had allegedly been discharged on the dance floor," police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said.

Police investigating the case believe a woman discharged personal protection spray after she was harassed by two men.

Senior Sergeant Steve Mills told the ABC neither the girl nor the two men came forward.

"Ultimately what we've determined is that a girl might have been approached and hassled a bit by a couple of blokes in the hotel and she's used some sort of personal spray," he said.

"I'm assuming the girl who did it felt genuinely scared. It's important to note that those sorts of things are illegal, although I sympathise with her for using it."

It is illegal to carry capsicum spray for the purpose of self defence in Victoria.

Paramedics treated about a dozen people outside the club who were having trouble breathing.

A woman in her 20s was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition.

"The investigation into the unknown substance is still ongoing," Ms Webster said.

Police called Metropolitan Fire Brigade crews to the scene to determine the source of the mystery gas.

"We used our detectors to try and find if there was a gas and could we identify it," MFB spokesman David Rankine said.

"But there was no residue of gas to be found.

"We're not quite sure what it was."

A 27-year-old Tullamarine man was arrested and interviewed in relation to a separate assault. He was released pending summons.
