The quality of education in the home district of Secondary and Primary Eduction Minister Tanveer Sait and also Chief Minister Siddaramaiah appears to be declining as the district slipped from top positions in both Pre-University and Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination results, announced by the PU Board and Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) on Thursday and Friday respectively.

The district’s pass percentage in SSLC slipped to 21st position from eighth last year. Similarly, the district slipped to the 14th from 11th place in PUC results.

This time, the overall pass percentage in SSLC is 72.03. In 2016, the district was in the eight position with 85.85%. Out of 39,323 students, who had appeared for the exam held in March, 10,489 students have been unsuccessful. Out of 18,702 boys, 6,048 have failed, and out of 18,801 girls, 4,441 have failed. As many as 27,314 students have passed. A total of 25 schools have secured 100% results.

While Mysuru rural registered a pass percentage of 56.03, Mysuru urban has secured 43.97%. Deputy Director for Public Instructions (DDPI), H R Basappa, said, shortage of teaching staff resulted in poor performance.

“There is a need for 336 guest faculty, but only 98 are working from November 2016. We will take appropriate measures to earn top ranking from next year,” he said. Special classes will be organised for unsuccessful students from June 15 to June 22. The respective school heads have been directed to conduct the classes in the schools.

It may be mentioned that the Zilla Panchayat and the Education department had devised a 25-point programme ‘Mysuru Guri Nooru’, to prepare the students for the examinations. The authorities have also conducted various programmes for the students and teachers to push the district to the top-five bracket.
