Tripura government has taken initiative to hold Aadhaar enrollment camps for Bru community people sheltered in seven camps in North district, official sources said today.
"This initiative was taken by the district administration following demands raised by the students living in the camps as Internally Displaced People (IDP). This move would legitimise the IDPs who are living in the camps for last 20 years," Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kanchanpur Santosh Deb said.
The Aadhaar cards would be given to students living in the transit camps in the first phase.
The rest of camp inmates would be given their Aadhaar cards in phased manner, he told PTI over phone from Kanchanpur.
Deb today said the local administration has arranged to start taking photos for Aadhaar cards of students belonging to the Reang IDP relief camps from next week.
Initially, the authorities would set a target of taking photos of 40 individuals per day for the first phase of the initiative.
When asked about his take on the issue, Mizoram Bru Displaced Peoples Forum (MBDPF) secretary Bruno Msha said, "the decision would be beneficial for the camp inmates".
"I am sure it will help us", Bruno said.
He added that the Bru coordination Committee had earlier sought Aadhaar cards a couple of times.
Over 37,000 people from the Reang community fled their homes in Mumit, Kolasib and Lunglei districts in Mizoram after ethnic riots broke out between the Mizo and Reang communities.
Since then, the Internally Displacement Victims (IDP) have been living in transit camps in Tripura.
Recently, a delegation of the Government of Mizoram visited the Reang camps in North Tripura district and held an identification drive that recognised around 32,000 people.
