Cab driver held for jewellery theft in Delhi

A 36-year-old cab driver has been arrested on charge of stealing a bag containing jewellery valued at Rs 50 lakh and Rs 3.5 lakh in from a car parked at a five-star hotel, police said on Wednesday.

Gurvinder Singh was arrested on Tuesday night from Ashok Vihar area after he was identified from closed-circuit television footage at the Connaught Place hotel.

Aakash of Rajasthan told police that he had gone to the hotel on April 30 for his sister's marriage and kept the bag containing the valuables in the car boot, Deputy Commissioner of Police B.K. Singh said.

When he returned, he found the bag missing.

A guest who had hired Gurvinder Singh's cab to reach the hotel told police that the taxi was hired from Ashok Vihar.

After he was questioned, the accused told police that he came across the bag as the car boot was not locked. The stolen items and have been recovered.

Gurvinder Singh had been arrested earlier on charge of causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, police said.
